Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome PRP Treatment

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition which causes pain, tingling and numbness in the arm and hand. This condition occurs when the main nerve of the hand, the median nerve is compressed or squeezed as it runs through the wrist. In most of the cases, this syndrome worsens over time, so early treatment and diagnosis is always important. At the early stages, the symptoms can be improved by simple remedies like avoiding certain activities or wearing wrist splint. It might happen that the pressure on the median nerve increases and it can lead to worsening of the symptoms and even nerve damage.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome:

The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • Sudden shock like sensations which radiated to the index and the thumb, ring and middle fingers.
  • Burning, pain, tingling and even numbness in the index, ring, middle fingers and the thumb.

  • Clumsiness and weakness of the hand, which makes it difficult to perform the daily activities.
  • Dropping things which results from the numbness, weakness of the wrist and even loss of proprioception.

The symptoms begin suddenly without any prior injury. In most of the cases, the patients find that the symptoms come and go at first, but as the condition worsen, the symptoms appear more frequently and also persist for longer periods of time. The symptoms occur mostly at the night time as most of the people sleep with their wrists in bent condition. The symptoms might also awaken the patient from sleep when it worsens.

Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome:

This syndrome is caused when excessive pressure is applied on the median nerve. The most common cause of inflammation is due to a medical condition which causes the swelling in the wrist and even leads to obstruction of blood flow. The medical conditions which can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome are:

  • Dysfunctioning of thyroid.
  • Diabetes.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Retention of fluid from menopause or pregnancy.
  • Trauma or Fracture of the wrist.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This syndrome can worsen when the wrist is overextended continuously. The repeated motion can lead to swelling and compression of the median nerve. This might result from:

  • Improper positioning of the wrist while using mouse or keyboard.
  • Prolonged exposure of the wrist to vibrations from power tools or hand tools.
  • Playing piano or continuous typing.

Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome with PRP:

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP Therapy is extensively used now to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. The process takes about 30 minutes of time. The PRP is injected to the site of the injury. PRP consists of growth factors which help in the recovery of the median nerve. As PRP is derived from the patient’s body itself, there are no chances of allergic reactions to it. PRP also works faster than any other treatment or therapy and provides a faster Recovery of the injured area. Dr Vineeth MB, Orthopedic Doctor in Ernakulam provides Carpal Tunnel Syndrome PRP Treatment in Kochi.
